Quick answers

The questions everyone asks first.

What does DIGIPIN stand for?

DIGIPIN stands for Digital Postal Index Number. It's a 10-character alphanumeric code introduced by the Department of Posts (India Post) that uniquely identifies any 4 m × 4 m square of land in India.

How is DIGIPIN different from a PIN code?

A PIN code identifies a postal area shared by thousands of homes. A DIGIPIN identifies a tiny 4 m × 4 m square — small enough to be almost unique to a single building or part of one. They work together, not against each other.

Is DIGIPIN free to use?

Yes. DIGIPIN is an open standard published by India Post and IIT Hyderabad. Anyone can generate, share, or build software with it without paying licensing fees.

Is DIGIPIN mandatory?

No. DIGIPIN is an additional address layer designed to coexist with regular postal addresses. You can use it alongside your normal address whenever it's useful.
